There are some really lovely photos of places I hope to visit one day. Especially the cliffs of West Bay. BTW - my daughter has very similar boots to the ones from the October 17 entry. I'd be most happy to participate in such a photo shoot.

The focussing and framing is tricky with a self-timer. I tend make use of any objects I can find. Sometimes, I've set up a second tripod, extended it to my real height and done things like sticking tape to the place where my arms end. Then I do the framing on that, set off the timer, run in, hurl the tripod away and take position. More often than not, I end up desperately trying to kick the upturned tripod out of the way because I didn't throw it far enough, while staying in balance and retaining the correct facial expression. The coordinated contortions and deep focus needed are similar to challenging tai chi sequences. I'm thinking of offering a video, actually. Pola-chi with Esther.

^ Perhaps g.'s friend could do our taxes after the shoot. Yes, I've used the same 'tripod as me' trick a few times as well. Read my reply to CDR for focusing info on this particular shot. For the 8x10 I was able to just use a cable release as I was quite close to the camera. I used a radio transmitter in my hand for the strobes. The 4x5 shot was actually much trickier & required the bulb release under foot & a bit trickery with the Nikon & transmitter for the strobes. I'll be first in line to buy your Pola-chi video. Can't wait!

I originally thought I'd be able to attach my strobes to the 8x10 lens (an ancient Turner & Reich triple convertible) but I guess the sync is not working. I'd never used the sync post before. So I ended up using a crude but effective solution. Read my reply to CDR for more techno babble. /felt the need to edit a typo. zorrry./

^ Thanks Dan. I actually left out quite a few of the details as I didn't want my description to turn into a short (or long) story. I used this »link as my focus tester. She's about 3/4 of a meter tall & I positioned her head at the same height mine would be. Next I measured the distance from front of camera to her eye then I cut a stick to that length so I could get my face in focus. Even at f16 the depth of field is very shallow with 8x10. Then there was the tripping the strobe issue. And my sleeves were constantly slipping down. I could go on but you get the idea. It all worked out well in the end though. Brilliant! And and extra well done for managing this all on your own. This will be hard to beat. Especially for sheer mindblowing sexiness. I mean.... what could POSSIBLY be sexier than a shot of you as Edwin? (With the possible exception of g.'s real tax consultant in the exact same pose.)

I though about some of yours while I was fumbling with my foot, the measuring stick I cut to get the focus close and several other things while sitting in the dark. I must meet g.'s tax consultant some day. Perhaps you'd like to bind the two of us for some impromptu photos?

i'm not an expert on the suit fashion of the last decades, but the result fits the referred time even better than the original in my opinion. the light is perfect and goes well with the sepia - a good choice on both.
it's a joy to spot the differences. and it's a joy to look for a long time at a photograph.

(on a sidenote, you resemble a lot to my tax consultant here, which gave me a good laugh.)

^ thanks gerald. it's funny. i briefly considered a few things to make this more authentic. among them were a more vintage suit and tie, a collar clasp and a toupee. in the end i decided to use what i have on hand for this shot. i was wearing a watch though. too bad you can't see it. i enjoy the differences too. (sidenote reply - perhaps your tax consultant also shares the decidedly obvious trait of having a very large ear, or lack of hair.) ;-)
