A similar story happened to me back in the late fivties. My mum & I were happily walking on a desert dune next to a beach in Normandy. Every few hundred meters, a German Blockhaus from WW2.

When eventually we reached a road, we had to climb over barbwires to get out of the dune. And this is only when we saw the "Achtung Minen !" sign (still familiar in those days)...
