Out To Pasture
There was this sequence of breaths a long time ago
But not so long that I do not remember most of it
There was this fence, needing paint, still does
And I sat near it and I hung my head,
Because I could only see this face when I closed my eyes
I see the fence this morning older like me
I listen for sounds in my head and everything escapes in vacuums of time
A beach was once a part of my dreams, but only deserts now
There was this song, I don’t remember the key
But a gift, was what it gave, hope in another room
I didn’t know then, but I do now
As if it matters on older shelves, jars of time
My coats remain hung, destinations long lost
For what reasons do you walk this morning young woman?
For what skies do you breathe these perfect mornings?
I sit near that fence in clouds of slipping hopes
But don’t be sad this season, spring will skip to fall
As fences turn to walls
