The original photograph was taken in 1943, so that he could take a copy with him, when he was sent to the Russian front. He kept it in a small leather-bound prayer book. Some days, between the prayers, he wrote his own messages, asking for the war to end, for the protection of his wife and daughter and for his safe return.
The bottom layer is a Polaroid of the old photograph, which we have in a small frame in our bedroom. The top layer and the cuttings are Polaroids of a page of the prayerbook with a handwritten entry for 10 Feb 1943.
