The Arctic Vigil
It all began with a conversation:
Birdclaws (speaking softly, slowly and totally out of context): I could steal for you.
Esther (taking it as an originally worded compliment): Thanks.
Birdclaws (clarifying): I work in a costume shop.
Esther (after a short pause): OOOH! I think I SEE. You mean you would literally like to steal for me?
Birdclaws: I hate it there. I have to steal just to stay sane. So I could send you the things that I steal from them. Would you like that?
Esther: It sounds reckless, dishonorourable and criminal. Yes, I think I would like it very much. Will you do it?
Birdclaws: OK. But you should use the things.
Esther: I solemnly promise to use them all unwisely.
And so, here we have it: the first picture featuring stolen goods (a sailor's costume) sent from America, taken on the broken Mamiya Birdclaws left behind in Amsterdam; taken in an empty space as a kind of outdoor reference to all the indoor emptiness this camera has captured in its recent past,
